Bone Broth Hot Chocolate (My Cozy Winter Wellness Drink)
You know I love a cozy moment — especially when San Diego gives us a rare stretch of chilly, rainy weather. And lately, this Bone Broth Hot Chocolate has been my go-to afternoon pick-me-up. It tastes just like a rich, creamy hot cocoa…but with a sneaky dose of protein, minerals, collagen, and electrolytes thanks to the beef bone broth.

Before you raise an eyebrow — trust me.
You cannot taste the broth.
It just adds depth, warmth, and that “why is this so good?” factor.
The key is using beef bone broth (not chicken). Chicken broth makes this savory — beef broth makes it silky, chocolatey, and shockingly delicious. Trader Joe’s version is my favorite for this recipe.
Paired with homemade vanilla bean whipped cream? Pure cozy magic.
Serve it in a clear mug (I used this one!) so you can see all the layers:

Whether you’re winding down at night, need a mid-morning boost, or just want a healthier winter treat, this is the moment.
Bone Broth Hot Chocolate (serves 2)
You’ll Need:
-
⅔ cup beef bone broth — NOT chicken. Trader Joe’s beef broth works perfectly.
-
3–4 tbsp maple syrup, depending on sweetness
-
1 tsp cinnamon
-
2–4 tbsp cocoa powder (I love 4 tbsp for extra richness!)
-
½ tsp vanilla extract
-
1 ½ cups milk of choice
-
Homemade whipped cream (optional but highly recommended)
Homemade Vanilla Bean Whipped Cream
Whip together until soft peaks form:
-
1 carton cold heavy whipping cream (or plant-based alternative)
-
1 tbsp vanilla bean paste
How to Make It
-
Add bone broth, milk, maple syrup, cinnamon, cocoa powder, and vanilla to a small saucepan.
-
Whisk continuously over medium heat until steamy and smooth — don’t boil.
-
Taste and adjust: more maple for sweetness, more cocoa for richness.
-
Pour into glass mugs and top with a generous swirl of vanilla bean whipped cream.
-
Enjoy immediately while warm and cozy.
Why You’ll Love It
-
Chocolatey, creamy, and absolutely delicious (no broth taste!)
-
Extra protein + minerals from the bone broth
-
Cozy afternoon treat on rainy or chilly days
-
Kid-approved if you leave off the cinnamon
-
Takes less than 10 minutes start to finish
