Double Chocolate Strawberry Date Muffins

If you’ve been around here for a while, you know I love a better-for-you muffin that still feels like a treat. These Double Chocolate Strawberry Date Muffins check every box: rich chocolate flavor, naturally sweetened with dates, and packed with ingredients that actually make you feel good.

Instead of refined sugar being the star, these muffins use Medjool dates for natural sweetness and moisture. And one of my favorite upgrades in this recipe is swapping the milk for kefir. I love using Lifeway Kefir because it adds protein, probiotics, and makes the muffins incredibly soft and fluffy.

Then we add fresh strawberries for a little burst of sweetness and brightness that pairs perfectly with the chocolate.

My kids think they’re getting chocolate muffins… and honestly, they’re not wrong.

Why You’ll Love These Muffins

  • Naturally sweetened with dates

  • Made with kefir for protein and probiotics

  • Rich double chocolate flavor

  • Perfect for breakfast, snacks, or lunchboxes

  • Freezer-friendly

They’re the kind of muffin you can make once and have ready all week for grab-and-go mornings.

Double Chocolate Strawberry Date Muffins

Yield: 12 muffins

Ingredients

  • 10.5 oz Medjool dates, pitted (about 17 dates)

  • ¾ cup warm water

  • ¾ cup Lifeway Kefir

  • ⅓ cup mild-flavored olive oil

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Dry Ingredients

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • ½ cup coconut sugar or Lakanto monk fruit sweetener (optional for extra sweetness)

Mix-ins

  • ½ cup chocolate chips, plus more for topping

  • ½ cup diced fresh strawberries

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners and lightly spray with oil.

  2. Prepare the dates.
Pit the dates if needed and measure after pitting. Add them to a high-speed blender.

  3. Heat the liquid.
In a glass measuring jug, combine the warm water and Lifeway Kefir. Microwave for about 60–80 seconds until warm.

  4. Soften the dates.
Pour the warm liquid and olive oil into the blender with the dates. If your blender can’t handle hot liquids, soak the dates in a heat-safe bowl instead. Let sit for 10 minutes to soften.

  5. Mix dry ingredients.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and coconut sugar (if using).

  6. Blend the wet mixture.
Blend the dates and liquid until completely smooth and creamy.

  7. Combine.
Pour the blended mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients and add the vanilla extract. Fold together with a spatula until smooth.

  8. Add the mix-ins.
Gently fold in the chocolate chips and diced strawberries.

  9. Fill the muffin tin.
Divide the batter evenly among the 12 muffin cups and sprinkle extra chocolate chips on top if desired.

  10. Bake.
Bake for 30–35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out with just a few moist crumbs.

  11. Cool.
Let the muffins cool on a rack for at least 2 hours before eating. This helps them set and improves the texture.

Tips for the Best Muffins

Use very soft Medjool dates.
They blend much smoother and create the best texture.

Don’t skip the cooling time.
Because these muffins are naturally sweetened, they firm up as they cool.

Dice the strawberries small.
This helps distribute them evenly throughout the muffins.

Storage

  • Fridge: Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

  • Freezer: Freeze for up to 3 months and reheat gently before serving.

These muffins are one of my favorite ways to have something chocolatey, filling, and kid-approved ready to go during the week. Between the dates, strawberries, and kefir, they’re packed with ingredients that feel good while still tasting like a bakery treat.
