Trader Joe’s pumpkin bread healthy dupe

Pumpkin bread season is officially here, and this homemade version has been on repeat.

It’s soft, moist, perfectly spiced, and has just the right amount of sweetness. Then I’m topping the whole thing with a creamy, dreamy cream cheese glaze because honestly, pumpkin bread without the glaze just feels wrong.

It comes together in one bowl with simple ingredients and makes the whole kitchen smell like fall. I love it alongside my morning coffee, as an afternoon treat, or honestly just sliced straight off the loaf when I walk by the kitchen.

Basically, it’s my homemade answer to the Trader Joe’s pumpkin loaf — and it might just become your new fall staple.

Why You’ll Love This

Perfectly spiced: Cinnamon, ginger, clove, nutmeg, and allspice give this all the cozy fall flavor without going overboard.

Super moist: Pumpkin puree and olive oil keep the loaf soft and tender.

Easy to make: No fancy equipment or complicated steps here. Just mix, pour, bake, and glaze.

Dairy-free: Use your favorite dairy-free cream cheese and milk for a completely dairy-free loaf.

The glaze: Creamy, tangy, slightly sweet, and absolutely worth making. It takes this from good pumpkin bread to reallygood pumpkin bread.

A Few Things to Know

You can use anywhere from ½ to ¾ cup sugar depending on how sweet you like your pumpkin bread. I used half regular brown sugar and half brown monkfruit sweetener, which worked really well.

If you don’t have all of the individual spices, you can swap them for 2 teaspoons of pumpkin spice mix.

And don’t skip letting the loaf cool completely before adding the glaze. I know it’s tempting, but the glaze will melt right off a warm loaf.

Pumpkin Loaf

Ingredients

  • 1 (15-ounce) can 100% pure pumpkin puree
  • ¾ cup sugar — you can use as little as ½ cup
  • ⅓ cup almond milk or another non-dairy milk
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground clove
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger or fresh grated ginger
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, or gluten free 1-to-1 equal sub
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon sugar, optional

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a loaf pan with parchment paper.

Add the pumpkin puree, sugar, almond milk, olive oil, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger to a mixing bowl. Whisk until well combined.

Sift in the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Use a spatula to mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.

If you want that extra little something on top, sprinkle the batter with cinnamon sugar before baking.

Bake for about 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let the loaf cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack and let cool completely.

Once cooled, spread generously with the cream cheese glaze, slice, and enjoy.

Cream Cheese Glaze

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces full-fat cream cheese, softened — dairy-free works too
  • 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2–4 tablespoons milk of choice

Instructions

Using an electric mixer, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.

Add the powdered sugar and vanilla and beat until smooth and combined.

Slowly add the milk while mixing until you reach your desired consistency, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.

Use immediately, or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Tips

For a dairy-free loaf: Use dairy-free cream cheese and your favorite non-dairy milk.

For less sweetness: Start with ½ cup sugar. The cream cheese glaze adds sweetness on top, so you don’t need the loaf itself to be super sweet.

For the easiest spice swap: Use 2 teaspoons pumpkin spice mix instead of the cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger.

For the best slices: Let the loaf cool completely before glazing and slicing. If you want really clean slices, pop it in the fridge for a little bit after glazing.

For extra fall vibes: The cinnamon sugar topping is optional, but highly recommended.

This is one of those recipes that makes me want to light a candle, put on a cozy playlist, and make a coffee at home just so I have an excuse to eat another slice.
